With both brands passionate about supporting people through the hormonal shift, we spoke to their expert teams for advice on two of the biggest menopausal concerns – hair thinning and change in mood.
A common symptom of menopause, and something the expert hair stylists at Josh Wood Colour get asked about often is hair thinning.
Whether it’s perimenopause, menopause or post-menopause, each stage brings its own set of changes, particularly regarding hair health. Understanding these changes and how to care for your hair can support you during this journey, which is why we spoke to Master Stylist, Katherine De Rozario.
Understanding perimenopause hair changes
Perimenopause, often starting in your 40s, is the lead-up to menopause. During this time, your body begins to prepare for menopause, and hormonal fluctuations occur as your ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen. This phase typically lasts several years and is characterised by irregular periods and various symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, changes in libido and sleep disturbances "These hormonal changes can significantly impact hair health. Oestrogen plays a crucial role in regulating blood flow to the scalp, which nourishes hair follicles. As oestrogen levels decline, you may notice increased hair shedding, dryness, and changes in texture" explains Katherine.
“As oestrogen decreases, more hair follicles may enter the telogen (resting) phase, leading to increased hair shedding. Hormonal fluctuations can alter the hair growth cycle, resulting in finer or coarser hair. Perimenopause can also affect the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism and hair growth. Thyroid imbalances may further contribute to hair loss”, Katherine continues.
Katherine’s advice for perimenopause hair health
"Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and hair hydrated. Incorporate a hydrating hair mask into your routine to nourish the hair. Products like the Josh Wood Colour Glosses can deeply condition the hair while refreshing its colour and restoring the shine. Focus on a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health, such as biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron."
Navigating menopause hair changes
Menopause is officially marked when you have not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months, typically occurring in your late 40s to early 50s. At this point, oestrogen production drops significantly, leading to various symptoms and changes. Hair Changes During Menopause may include:
Increased Hair Dryness: With lower oestrogen levels, hair may become drier and more brittle.
Thinning Hair: Many women experience noticeable thinning as hair follicles become less active.
Hair Texture Shifts: Hair may lose its lustre and bounce, becoming flat or limp.
Katherine’s recommendation for menopause hair health
“Be gentle with your hair! Use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to avoid stripping your hair of natural oils. Deep Conditioning Treatments are a must. Regularly apply nourishing hair masks, such as the Josh Wood Colour Miracle Mask, which helps condition and hydrate the hair. Be conscious of your scalp health. Consider scalp massages to promote blood flow, helping to nourish hair follicles.”
Hair changes when you reach post-menopause
Post-menopause is the phase that follows menopause, where your body settles into a new hormone balance characterised by lower oestrogen and progesterone levels. While some women find that menopausal symptoms lessen during this stage, others may continue to experience challenges, including hair changes.
“Consistency is key in post menopause haircare. Maintaining a consistent routine becomes essential to manage dryness and texture changes. Choose products specifically designed for mature hair, focusing on hydration and nourishment. Consider incorporating the Miracle Hair Oil is an into your routine”, shares Katharine.
“Josh Wood Colour’s Miracle oil is a versatile product, made with three natural oils, hydrates, detangles, and protects hair from UV and pollution damage. With impressive results—98% of users reported feeling less damaged after use—this oil can be a game-changer.
Schedule regular trims to keep your hair looking healthy and remove split ends. Protecting your hair from sun exposure by wearing hats or using UV protection products is also important. It’s not always easy, but if you can embrace your natural change, this is a great time to explore new styles and colours that reflect your evolving identity” says Katherine.
Another common symptom of menopause are mood swings. Experts in blending, the team at Tisserand Aromatherapy share their advice on ways you can enhance how you feel, naturally.
69% of women experience menopausal mood swings (and whilst it’s nice to know you’re not alone), it doesn’t change the fact the hormonal shifts playing havoc with your emotions is tough. Feeling in low mood can be due to the fluctuation between oestrogen and progesterone and this can impact the mind. What’s more, if you’re not catching those Zzzs, feeling hot and bothered (plus everything else that can come at this time), then you can be left feeling far from your best yourself.
The experts at Tisserand Aromatherapy recommend these 5 tips for helping how you feel:
Proactively approach better sleep, if it’s not coming naturally
Sleep should be your number one wellness priority at any life stage. The tricky thing is that hormonal changes can disrupt your sleep patterns, making it harder to get a good night's rest. To improve your sleep quality, you can try listening to Deep Sleep Music and consider using an essential oil blend, such as the one found in the Tisserand Aromatherapy Sleep Better Pillow Mist. With its blend of lavender, sandalwood, and jasmine, it creates a calming environment conducive to restful sleep.
Think about what you’re eating
It can be tempting to grab any snack within reach, but there’s a reason experts stress that what you put inside can reflect how you feel on the outside, and eating a balanced diet, really is key to feeling better at this time in life. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can help you feel better in yourself. As well as avoiding caffeine and alcohol, especially in the evening, can also promote better sleep and reduce any feelings of anxiety.
Keep moving to feel better
Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Incorporate activities you enjoy, whether it's walking, yoga, or regular dance breaks (don’t worry, no one is watching!). Movement really is so important when you get to menopause.
Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques
Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can help manage stress and improve mood. Pair these practices with a special essential oil blend too, such as the Tisserand Aromatherapy Restore Balance Blend, designed to support hormonal balance and promote emotional wellbeing – which will help you find more relaxing moments in your day.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Lastly - and most importantly - reach out to healthcare professionals if you're struggling with menopausal mood swings. They can provide guidance, support, and treatment options tailored to your needs.
