Hair Colouring 101 - Top Tips on How to Dye Your Hair
By Alex. Created on July 9, 2024
If you’ve never coloured your hair at home, or you’re a seasoned professional, here are some tips and tricks to help you get the best results yet!
How often should I dye my hair?
Once you’ve coloured your hair, we recommend allowing 4-6 weeks to pass before colouring again. This is to ensure that you have a good amount of root regrowth to take to the colour but also to ensure your hair does not turn too dark from the amount of dye on top of the previous dye.
To maintain your colour in between colouring you could consider using a Hair Gloss to refresh the colour like our Josh Wood Colour Icy Blonde Gloss which helps to neutralise the brassy tones in your hair, or even our Chocolate Brunette Gloss to help enrich your dark brown hair.

To maintain your highlights or cover your grey hairs, Josh Wood Colour has a range of Root Cover Ups like our Blending Brush for wet hair application and our Root Smudge for dry hair application. Our Blending Brush helps to fill in your hairline and make your hair appear thicker as well as cover those pesky greys, you just apply the product to the scalp and then blow dry the product in and style as usual! Whereas with the Root Smudge, you apply the product to your scalp dry, either to cover your grey roots or to extend your highlights.
Tips for a Successful Home Hair Colouring Experience
Choosing the Right Shade
Understand Your Base Hair Colour: On our website we provide an online colour consultation quiz to help you determine your base colour and the best shade for you. We also offer free video consultations with our colour experts so you can chat with our experts about your hair journey and hair goals.
Consider Your Skin Undertone: The brand's shades are formulated to complement various skin tones. Knowing whether your skin has cool, warm, or neutral undertones can help you choose the most flattering hair colour.
Prepare Your Hair and Workspace
Hair Health: Ensure your hair is in good condition before colouring. Josh Wood Colour’s Miracle Mask is a great pre-colour treatment that nourishes and prepares your hair for colouring.
Set Up Your Space: Cover your workspace with old towels or newspapers to avoid any stains. Have all your tools ready: with the gloves included in any Josh Wood Colour Colour kit, Josh Wood Colour comb, the Josh Wood Colour Gown, and the Josh Wood Colour Bowl and Brush for seamless application.
Follow the Instructions & Patch Test
Read Thoroughly: Each Josh Wood Colour kit comes with detailed instructions. Read them carefully before starting the process.
Hair Dye PatchTest: Always do a patch test before applying the colour to your entire head. This helps you gauge the final result and ensures no adverse reactions. The best place to do this would be near your parting underneath the hair or by your ear. Only apply a small amount of dye just in case of a reaction, leave on for the allotted time and then wipe off. If there is a burning or itching sensation wipe away immediately.
Hair Dye Application Techniques
Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into manageable sections using the Josh Wood Colour Comb and clipping the sections up with sectioning clips. This ensures even application and better coverage.
Roots First: To ensure that your colour is even and properly covers your grey hairs, start by processing the colour onto your roots first, them combing through in the last 10 minutes of the developing process. This will stop the colour building up on the mid lengths and ends but will successfully colour the greys.
Even Distribution: Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the colour evenly through your hair, ensuring every strand is coated.
Aftercare is Key
Hair Conditioner: Use the Deep Conditioning Treatment included in the Josh Wood Colour kit. It's formulated to lock in colour and add shine.
