How To Maintain Balayage - A Guide For All Colours
By Lauren. Created on May 10, 2023
Balayage is an expert hair colouring technique that creates natural-looking, sun-kissed highlights by painting the dye on the hair in a sweeping motion. Balayage is popular because it is low-maintenance, flattering, and long-lasting.
While balayage is a complex technique that should be done by an expert at a salon, maintenance to keep it looking fresh as long as possible can definitely be done at home.
We’ve spoken to our top colourists for their tips on balayage maintenance for all hair colours.
How to maintain balayage for blonde hair
Blonde balayage can be prone to brassiness when the hair turns yellow or orange over time due to exposure to sunlight, chlorine, or hard water.
To prevent or correct brassiness, use a purple shampoo or toner once or twice weekly. Our Icy Blond Gloss is perfect for brassiness.
Purple shampoo or toner can neutralise unwanted warm tones and restore the cool and ashy shades.
How to maintain balayage for brown or black hair
Brown or black balayage can be easier to maintain than blonde balayage, as it does not require frequent toning or bleaching.
However, brown or black balayage can still fade or lose its shine over time due to washing, styling, or environmental factors.
To preserve the colour and vibrancy of brown or black balayage, use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner formulated for colour-treated hair. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner can gently cleanse and moisturise the hair without stripping away the colour or natural oils.
Our care bundles for fine, fragile hair or dry damaged hair with shampoo, conditioner and our Miracle Mask were developed to maintain and protect coloured hair.
How to maintain balayage for red or copper hair
Red or copper balayage can be stunning and eye-catching. Still, it can also be challenging to maintain, as red pigments fade faster than other colours.
Use a colour-depositing shampoo or conditioner once a week to keep the red or copper tones vibrant and rich. Colour-depositing shampoo or conditioner can replenish the lost pigments and boost the intensity of the colour. Our Copper Gloss is perfect for helping maintain balayage in red or copper hair.
General tips for maintaining balayage
While some tips are colour specific, the following tips apply to all types of balayage:
Avoid washing your hair too often, as it can wash away the colour and natural oils. Try to wash your hair every two days or longer, and use dry shampoo in between washes if needed.
Use deep conditioning treatments once a week to hydrate and nourish your hair. You can use masks or natural oils such as almond or coconut. Apply the treatment to your damp hair, leave it on for at least 10 minutes, and then rinse.
Avoid heat styling too often, as this can damage your hair and cause the colour to fade. Use a protectant spray before styling with heat tools like hairdryers, curling irons, or flat irons. Keep the temperature low or medium.
Visit the salon every four months or longer for touch-ups and toners. Balayage doesn’t require frequent salon visits as it grows naturally without harsh lines. However, you should refresh your colour and add more dimension from time to time.
