Josh gets colour creative backstage at Marc Jacobs and Matty Bovan
It’s been a busy fashion week for Josh and the Atelier team, backstage atelier hair & beauty, dashing from backstage at Marc Jacob’s show in New York to Matty Bovan’s show in London. The designers on both sides of the Atlantic calling on the team’s expertise to create an eclectic mix of catwalk colour, to complement their vision and the models wearing it. Here, Josh reveals the trends appearing for Spring Summer 2020.
‘This season there’s a move to new, powerful subtlety in colour that speaks to a sophistication and a celebration of the individual wearing it. It’s the opposite to bright colours that now feel passe, or colours created and worn in unison on the catwalk, ’ says Josh.
At Marc Jacobs hair shades ranged from soft ‘untouched’ naturals as seen on Kaia and Gigi, to the dark onyx bowl worn by FeiFei Sun, and an eclectic blonde mix. From a Harajuku copper blonde, Josh created for Issa Lish, and the Skater blonde worn by Joel Wolfe.
“The show was a joyful celebration of diversity, inclusion and individuality with an optimistic, love-filled feel,” says Josh.
To create a unique look for each Marc Jacob’s persona, Josh alongside Mads and Saffy from the Atelier team, worked closely with hair stylist Guido Palau and makeup artist Pat McGrath, to create a unique colour palette and custom beauty moment for each model. The result? A colourful, arresting array of catwalk characters with no two looks the same.
Paint Dipped Ponytails
For Matty Bovan, Josh and the Atelier team led by Marley, working alongside hair stylist Syd Hayes, to create a hazy palette of powdered pastels. Shades of duck egg blue, pale slate, eau de nil and lavender were hand-painted onto high ponytails. On blonde hair, the colour was painted directly on to extensions. To achieve the same four colour finishes on brunettes, the ponytails were dipped in household paint backstage, delivering an added toughness to the texture and strength to the look.

“We made ‘hair paint’ a thing,” says Josh. “Matty always pushes the boundaries from a creative perspective. It’s amazing for us to work with him in a completely artistic, painterly freedom of expression.”
