My First Grey: Meet Charlotte
By Lauren. Created on January 14, 2026
For many of us, spotting our first grey hair is a moment we never forget. It can spark surprise, frustration, curiosity — or even a complete shift in how we see our hair and ourselves.
As part of our My First Grey series, we’re inviting members of the Josh Wood Colour community to share their unique grey stories. From first sightings to how they choose to cover (or embrace!) their greys today, these are honest, real experiences — just like Charlotte’s.
When Did You See Your First Grey Hair?
“I think I saw my first grey hairs when I was about 40. They appeared one strand at a time, which I of course yanked out with the tweezers.
I then moved on to having a half head of colour with foils at the hairdresser, which quickly became very time-consuming and expensive.”
Charlotte’s experience will feel familiar to many — those early greys often arrive quietly, but before long they can change your entire colour routine.
How Did You Feel When You Saw Your First Grey Hair?
“I remember feeling really cross about getting grey hair — I’m too young to get grey hair!”
That emotional reaction is completely natural. Greys are often tied to ideas about ageing, even though they show up at all stages of life. At Josh Wood Colour, we believe there’s no right way to feel — or respond — when greys appear.
How Do You Cover (or Embrace!) Your Greys Now?
“I love the Josh Wood Colour products as they produce such a natural result and great grey cover.
The Miracle Mask deeply moisturises and makes my hair feel like silk.
And the Root Smudge is great for touching up when the roots start coming through — but I mostly use it on the temples and hairline around my face, as the grey hairs there seem to come through at remarkable speed!”
Charlotte’s routine is a great example of targeted, low-maintenance colour. Rather than full salon visits, she focuses on soft coverage where it’s needed most, while keeping hair healthy, glossy and hydrated.
“I guess I will ‘embrace the grey’ one day — but not just yet!”
And that’s the key: it’s your choice, on your timeline.

We’d love to hear it.
