    • PPD (para-phenylenediamine) is a common ingredient in hair dye and is generally considered safe for most people when used as directed. However, it is a potential allergen and can cause severe allergic reactions on the scalp. This is why performing a patch test is crucial. While PPD itself isn’t directly harmful to healthy hair follicles, severe allergic reactions can lead to inflammation and scratching, which could potentially result in hair loss.

    • PPD (para-phenylenediamine) is a chemical commonly found in most permanent hair colours. It serves as a dye base, helping to achieve long-lasting results.

    • No, not all Permanent hair dyes have PPD. We are PPD-free colours.

    • Our products do not contain PPD but the Permanent Colour kits do contain an ingredient called toluene-2,5-diamine sulphate also known as PTD. The legal warning for PTD is Phenylenediamines (Toluenediamines) and Phenylenediamines.

PTD has a similar chemical structure to PPD and works in a similar way to activate the colouring pigments for permanent hair colour. There is some evidence to suggest that PTD causes fewer allergic reactions than PPD, but a small number of people can still experience a reaction to this ingredient and that is why it is very important to carry out an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours before using the product every time you colour your hair.

You will find information on how to carry out the test inside the pack and there is also lots of help available on our website https://joshwoodcolour.com/blogs/community/how-to-cover-grey-at-home?_pos=1&_sid=9d4bd45d5&_ss=r

If you notice any abnormal reactions during the Allergy Alert Test 48 hour period such as itching, redness or swelling in or around the test area DO NOT APPLY THE PRODUCT.
