How to achieve 100% Grey Coverage
By Alex Lomas. Created on September 16, 2024
Wanting 100% grey coverage and actually achieving it shouldn’t be so difficult. And it’s not, if you use Josh Wood Colour. This is a step-by-step guide on how to achieve 100% grey coverage at home using Josh Wood Colour Permanent Colours.
Step 1: Get the hair colour shade right
First of all, it is important to get the shade right. When picking out the perfect shade for your hair you must consider your skin tone and eye colour. If you are unsure of picking the perfect shade for you, you could try out our online hair colour quiz or book in a complimentary video consultation with one of our colourists so you can discuss your hair journey and hair goals with an expert.
It is also very important to consider your existing colour, whether your hair is it’s natural colour or pre-lightened, as this can affect the results of the hair colouring process.
PLEASE NOTE it is always important to carry out an Allergy Alert test 48 hours before colouring your hair. You will find information on how to carry out the test inside the pack and there is also lots of help available on our website.

If you notice any abnormal reactions during the Allergy Alert Test 48 hour period such as itching, redness or swelling in or around the test area DO NOT APPLY THE PRODUCT.
Step 2: Section the hair
When it comes to colouring your hair, it is essential that you properly section your hair into even sections either using sectioning clips or with a comb. Create even sections for your hair thickness throughout. The best way to do this is to check you can see the colour from the last section coming through when starting a new section.
Step 3: Use a bowl and brush during application
After ensuring your hair is properly sectioned, we would recommend that you use a bowl and brush to ensure that you are actively covering the grey roots. Using the brush, you place and pat the colour onto your roots ensuring that all regrowth is covered. We recommend that you avoid massaging or rubbing the colour into your hair.
First time application will be different to re-growth application, for re-growth application we recommend that you colour liberally to the roots where you have stubborn grey hairs, then drag the colour down to the rest of your lengths to avoid a build up of colour. If you are more cautious about colouring your hair for the first time at home, we would say to have someone else on hand to be able to help get the tricker sections in the back and underneath of the head.
Step 4: Covering stubborn grey hairs
Stubborn grey hairs require a longer development process of 5-10 minutes. It is recommended to leave the hair dye on for 30-45 minutes for the maximum amount of coverage to get rid of those pesky greys. When applying the colour you should start where the hair is mostly white/grey and revisit those areas with extra product to ensure colour saturation.
For Porous hair it is recommended that you should not leave the dye on your hair for no longer than 30 minutes. This is because the dye could saturate the colour too much and may give darker, duller results. Porous hair may not be suitable for permanent colour depending on the reason for it, if in doubt, follow the Manufacturer’s instructions.
Using Josh's secret weapon, the Miracle Shot, will also help to directly target those pesky grey hairs. The Miracle Shot is a unique blend of ingredients designed to deliver 100% grey coverage, as well as 62% less breakage and 38% less colour fade as well as other amazing benefits that make your hair healthier and shinier.
Step 5: Making the colour last longer
